Conserve Energy In Your Home

You probably know a few of the basic ways to save energy in your home; turn off lights, don’t crank up the heater when people aren’t home and don’t leave the refrigerator door open, right? Well, those are all good things to do, but there are many other ways you can save money and energy through conservation in your home.

Energy conservation tips

  • Install fluorescent light bulbs in your lamps: These bulbs are generally more expensive than normal light bulbs, but they more than pay for themselves through energy savings and durability.
  • Unplug electronics when not in use: Even when turned off, many electronics remain activated in standby mode, causing a continual drain on your electric bill.
  • Clean and clear your heaters: Make sure warm-air registers, baseboard heaters and radiators are clean and not obstructed by furniture.
  • Check your filters: Replace furnace filters periodically to make sure you’re getting the maximum efficiency from your heater.
  • Retain heat: Turn off all ventilating fans shortly after cooking or showering to retain warmed air in your home.
  • Check your insulation: Your hot water heater and water pipes should be insulated to prevent unnecessary heat loss.
  • Use cold water for laundry: The majority of electricity used in the process of doing laundry is from using heated water. Save energy and money by switching to cold-water cycles.
